On Saturday night, Rowan’s non-varsity team battled against Franklin & Marshall. The Profs extended their overall record to 7-2-1, beating F & M with an amazing 13-2 victory.
“In the first period I thought we were a little sloppy, in the second period we really turned it on and the third period we had such a big lead it’s really kind of hard gauge. We kind of pulled back, but too many penalties, they’ll come to haunt us later in life,” Caulfield said evaluating the game.
The game also featured stellar play by Rowan’s goalie, senior Nick Dipaolo, who made key saves throughout the game.
“I stayed focused when the play was down the other end, most of the time I had to keep myself awake and ready for anything,” said Dipaolo.
He finished the night with 25 saves on 27 shots.
The scoring started in the first with the first goal coming from Franklin & Marshall’s Sam Hairston at 16:29. The Profs battled back to tie it up with a goal from junior Ryan Simrell at 5:03.
The gritty first period was interrupted continuously by the ref’s whistleas it called penalties or an icings. Rowan had five penalties.
“We started off slow. I don’t know why, we had two good practices this week. Rowan always starts off slow, that’s our big downfall right now, other than that everyone is playing well,” said junior Fred Brewer.
The second period, Rowan decided to go on the offensive by adding six goals. Junior Chris Keyser started the offensive by scoring at 14:14. Brewer scored his first of four goals of the night at 13:34.
“We knew we were better than that team. We had to come out and beat them,” said Brewer.
Only a couple of seconds later at 13:25, freshman Collin Davis added another goal, making the score 4-1. Less than a minute later, at 12:44, sophomore Frederick Lanny wanted in on the action and made the score 5-1. Things cooled off as the period neared the end, but Rowan kept coming. Sophomore Billy Choy scored at 6:45 to make it a 6-1 hockey game and Brewer anted up his second goal of the period at 1:44 to make it 7-1 to close the period out. After such a flat first period, the success of the period came from the players themselves.
“Awesome speech by the coach, no I think they realize, you know you don’t have to tell these guys, these guys have talent. They know when they are not playing up to their potential. I let them know as much in the locker room and came out played the way there capable of playing.” Coach Caulfield said.
Dipaolo had a strong second period gobbling up anything that even came near the net.
Entering the third period, Rowan started two men down and at had four men in the penalty box at one time late in the period.
“Thank God our penalty kill is so good, that really seems to be our bread and butter. We seem to do pretty well on the penalty kill. We don’t like to use it so often, we prefer never have to use it, but we have to we do a nice job on the PK,” said Caulfield.
Rowan was not done assaulting Franklin & Marshall and neither was Brewer, who scored at 16:31 to get a hat trick, though hats did not fly. Thirty seconds later freshman Cameron Rowand scored, making it 9-1. Sophomore Joe Byrne added the 10th goal for Rowan by weaving in and out of Franklin & Marshall players to beat the goalie at 14:59. After this goal, Franklin changed goalies.
Forty seconds later, Franklin & Marshall, playing for pride at this point, made it a 10-2 game by a goal from Henry Fandel. The goalie change did not seem stop Rowan or Brewer, who added his fourth goal of the night at 13:37, making it a 11-2 hockey game. Sophomore Joe Abate added the 12th goal of the night for Rowan at 10:43, and freshman Dan Urbaniak scored the 13th and last goal of the night for Rowan.
A game like this should send a message to the rest of the conference and conference that this team is serious and hungry.
“Every game we play and every game we win, that just saying we’re here and we’re here to stay,” said Brewer.

I saw the first two periods of this game. It was awsome. Rowan is playing great hockey but they need to stay out of the box.
