Democracy shinedthe past three days as Rowan University undergraduate students came to the Student Center to vote in the Student Government Association's (SGA) annual end-of-the-school year elections. In a flurry of counting on Wednesday afternoon, the results are in.

The SGA senior class president was a race between current SGA president, Brittany Meyer, and public relations major Freddy Melendez. In a shocking moment of voting, the campaigners tied for the position.

"It's exciting because what are the chances of a tie? I'm very excited," Meyer said. "It's a totally fair competition. I couldn't have a better competitor. It's a good fight; I'm nervous and excited."

To determine who will be the next senior class president, a run-off election will be announced on Apr. 24 at 11 a.m.

It was another close race between the candidates for SGA vice president, but sophomore class president Nicole Mershon pulled ahead and will take over the position next year.

"It's very exciting; I had a very strong opponent, and I'm happy that I pulled [the campaign] off," Mershon said. "I look forward to working with all the clubs next year."

Her opponent is taking his loss gracefully and does not view it as a setback in the least.

"Of course it's disappointing [to not win]," freshman class president Wilmer Castro said, "but it's not going to stop me. I still want to be involved in SGA in any way I can, and maintain leadership positions where I can make a change."

The position of recording secretary is now filled by Jessica-Rae D'Ambrosio, who sat on the e-board when the current secretary, senior Jessica Prach, was unavailable.

As for the referendums, a student life fee will be created to support the expansion of Rowan After Hours, the alternative weekend programming.

"I'm absolutely in agreement with the fee as it will only be for good," Phillip Castro, next school year's SGA president, said. "I sat on the Rowan After Hours task force and saw that administration was really concerned with students having activities during peak hours."

"It's disappointing that we have to pass a fee [to get the support necessary], but it really will benefit," he continued.

The second referendum was a choice between a new ambulance or a new student bus. The big purchase for next semester will be a brand-new Rowan ambulance.

"This is very beautiful. Students recognized our work, and the need, and I can't wait to give them the care they deserve," Rowan EMS Captain Caryn Campenelli said. "People saw it as necessity over luxury, and that's probably why we won."
Congratulations to all the winners; referendums passed will go into effect next semester.
