Naturally, most of the reasons why I love this season revolve around food. It's sort of what I do. Everything is fresh and I can literally pick my food off a tree if I want. October is not complete without at least a half dozen trips to a local orchard or farm market for bags of freshly picked apples and pumpkins.
This weekend I took a trip up to Terhune Orchards in Lawrenceville, NJ for their annual Harvest Festival events, which take places every weekend in October. Although the farm is roughly an hour's drive north of Rowan's campus, the trip is worth it for a bite of their fresh apple cider doughnuts and homemade pies.
A family-owned farm, Terhune has been a major part of the community for 33 years and extends their hand throughout New Jersey, selling their farm-fresh goods and organic produce at neighborhood farmers markets. Customers drive for hours to purchase some of their 30 varieties of apples, 28 varieties of peaches and seven different kinds of pears.
For those looking to save a bit on gas, Rowand Farm Market in Glassboro and Duffield's Farm Market in Sewell are a little closer to home. Duffield's remains one of my favorites because of their wide range of produce and incredible prices. During September and October they offer a corn maze, hay rides, and pick-your-own pumpkin trips every Saturday.
Wherever you go, be sure to support your local farmers by checking out local farm stands and markets. Not sure where they are? Put your address or county into the search bar ontheir web page and find all the local farms and events in the area.
