Frank Wilczynski broke a record that is likely the first of many, rushing for a team-high 133 yards, and running amuck against The College at Brockport in Rowan's 37-20 victory over the Golden Eagles this past Saturday at Bob Boozer Field in Brockport, NY.
In the win, the junior set Rowan's single-game record for rushing yards by a quarterback of 133 yards against a Brockport defense that entered the game third in the NJAC in scoring defense. The Pine Hill native's performance nearly doubled the previous record, set by Larry Lewis in a 1985 game against Newport News.
"You're there as a coach and you call a play and you see him running and you're like 'throw it, throw it, throw it' and then you see him run and you're like 'no, no, no' and then you see him just run abandon in the secondary," said head coach Jay Accorsi. "He brings that intangible at the quarterback spot that most don't have. He did some great things. He escaped pressure, he was running around, and he got some big first downs."
For the second straight week, the Profs jumped out to a sizeable first-half lead. On the fifth play of the game, Wilczynski connected with senior Davon Edwards for an 18-yard strike, as Rowan took a 7-0 lead. In the second quarter, a 19-yard field goal by Mark Getsinger was followed by a pair of touchdown tosses by Wilczynski, as he hit junior Marcus Lee from 13 yards out and senior tight end Derek Piccini with a 21-yard strike to give Rowan a 24-0 lead at the half.
Wilczynski completed 22-of-35 passes for 296 yards and four touchdowns, as the Profs spoiled Brockport's homecoming. Wilczynski now has ten touchdowns and just two interceptions this season.
In the second half, Brockport's offense turned it on. Three minutes into the third quarter, senior receiver Felipe Lopez, who had been helped off the field twice previously, caught a 21-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Zack Luke to begin the comeback effort.
A pair of Getsinger field goals were countered by a duo of 3-yard scoring dives by Brockport tailback Garet Lynch, as the Golden Eagles cut their deficit to 30-20.
